Ze traden voor het eerst onder de naam "Tom & Jerry" op in de tweede helft van de jaren vijftig en sinds de jaren zestig als Simon & Garfunkel. In 1970 gingen ze uit elkaar om sindsdien sporadisch voor eenmalige concerten of tours weer bij elkaar te komen.

Tijdens hun middelbare school tijd begonnen Simon en Garfunkel met het zingen van liedjes van onder andere The Everly Brothers. In 1956 namen ze de artiestennamen Tom and Jerry aan en brachten enkele singles uit zonder succes. Vanaf eind 1963 traden ze op onder de naam Simon & Garfunkel. De doorbraak van het duo kwam in 1966.

In januari 1966 haalde een remix vanuit de studio van hun The Sounds of Silence plotseling een hoge notering in de Amerikaanse hitlijsten. Het nummer was in de hele wereld erg succesvol en bereikte in de Top 40 de 10e plaats. Doordat hun muziek in 1967 werd gebruikt als soundtrack voor de film The Graduate (met Dustin Hoffman in de hoofdrol) werd hun naam definitief gevestigd. Met hun rustige, goed in het gehoor liggende folkachtige nummers stegen ze in de hitparades. Nummers als "Homeward Bound", "I am a rock", "A hazy shade of winter", "America", "Scarborough fair", "Mrs. Robinson", "The Boxer", "Bridge over troubled water", "Cecilia", "El condor pasa" en "My little town" zijn nog steeds populair en veel van deze songs werden evergreens.

Het duo ging in 1970 (tijdelijk) uit elkaar maar zongen op elkaars soloplaten af en toe mee. Na elf jaar kwamen Paul Simon en Art Garfunkel in september 1981 voor één keer samen voor een optreden in Central Park in New York. Bijna een half miljoen mensen waren aanwezig bij dit memorabele optreden waar ook een DVD van verschenen is.

In 2004 hielden zij de Old Friends Tour en daarna traden ze sporadisch weer als duo op. Als soloartiesten hebben ze ook hits gescoord waarbij Paul Simon de meeste solohits op zijn naam heeft staan.

In 2020 zond de AVRO/TROS een documentaire uit met Nick en Simon die zich samen met vriend Kees in het leven van hun muzikale inspiratiebronnen Simon & Garfunkel storten.

Dr. Martin Luther King says he does not intend to cancel plans for an open housing march Sunday into the Chicago suburb of Cicero. Cook County Sheriff Richard Ogleby asked King to call off the march and the police in Cicero said they would ask the National Guard to be called out if it is held. King, now in Atlanta, Georgia, plans to return to Chicago Tuesday.

In Chicago Richard Speck, accused murderer of nine student nurses, was brought before a grand jury today for indictment. The nurses were found stabbed an strangled in their Chicago apartment.

In Washington the atmosphere was tense today as a special subcommittee of the House Committee on Un-American activities continued its probe into anti-Vietnam war protests. Demonstrators were forcibly evicted from the hearings when they began chanting anti-war slogans.

Former Vice-President Richard Nixon says that unless there is a substantial increase in the present war effort in Vietnam, the U.S. should look forward to five more years of war. In a speech before the Convention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in New York, Nixon also said opposition to the war in this country is the greatest single weapon working against the U.S.

Op de single Seven O'Clock News/Silent Night zingen Paul Simon en Art Garfunkel het traditionele kerstnummer Silent Night. De piano wordt bespeeld door Garfunkel. Tijdens het nummer wordt een nieuwsbulletin ingefaded, dat naarmate het nummer vordert steeds luider wordt. Het nieuwsbericht is niet authentiek, maar speciaal voor het nummer opgenomen. De behandelde nieuwsfeiten zijn echter wel echt en vonden plaats op 3 augustus 1966. De stem van de nieuwslezer is van diskjockey Charlie O'Donnell, die later bekend zou worden als de presentator van Wheel Of Fortune, de Amerikaanse versie van Het Rad Van Fortuin.
