Een ballade in E-mineur, "Duncan" vertelt het verhaal van Lincoln Duncan, zoon van een visser. Hij kan maar niet in slaap vallen in zijn kamer in een goedkoop motel vanwege een paar in de aangrenzende motelkamer dat luid de liefde bedrijft. Daarop slaat Duncan aan het mijmeren. Hij herinnert zich zijn beslissing om te vertrekken uit zijn geboortestad in de Canadese Maritieme Provincies om de verveling en de vissoep te ontlopen en zijn tocht richting New England. Hij herinnert zich het opraken van geld, het verliezen van zijn maagdelijkheid aan een jonge vrouwelijke straatpredikant - "net als een hond was ik bevriend met iedereen" - en ten slotte het 's nachts op de grond liggen en het God bedanken voor zijn muzikale (en in wijdere zin zijn tastbare / sensuele) capaciteiten.
