Volgens talrijke interviews met Billy was het lied oorspronkelijk geschreven over zijn relatie met zijn toenmalige vriendin Elle Macpherson, maar het eindigde ook steeds over zijn toekomstige vrouw Christie Brinkley (beide vrouwen zijn twee van de meest bekende supermodellen van de jaren 1980). Billy heeft ook gezegd dat het lied is geïnspireerd door de muziek van Frankie Valli en de Four Seasons.
Christie Brinkley was in de videoclip van het nummer de "Uptown girl".
