Het lied "Riot In Cell Block # 9" heeft als inspiratie gediend voor het nummer van The Beach Boys. "Riot In Cell Block # 9" is een klassiek voorbeeld van een indringend r&b-lied gecomponeerd door Jerry Leiber en Mike Stoller. De bekendste versie is die van "The Robins" uit 1954, deze kwam op nummer 1 in de Amerikaanse r&b-charts. In dit nummer zit een man in een federale gevangenis zijn straf uit voor een gewapende overval. Op 2 juli 1953 om 04:00 uur wordt hij ruw uit zijn slaap gewekt door een gevangenisopstand! Het oproer begint in het 4e cellenblok en breidt zich vandaaruit, via de algemene hal, van cel naar cel. De gevangenisbewakers, gewapend met pistolen, dreigen alle gevangenen te elektrocuteren als de opstand niet snel stopt. Een van hen, Scarface Jones, besluit wraak te nemen door zichzelf te bewapenen met dynamiet. Zevenenveertig uur later, om 03:00 uur op 4 juli 1953, komt er door de inzet van traangas een einde aan het oproer en keren de gevangenen terug naar hun cel.
