War Song werd in 1972 uitgebracht ter ondersteuning van George McGoverns presidentiële campagne, die liep tegen de zittende president Richard Nixon. Young had al eerder laten blijken dat hij tegen Nixon was, o.a. met het nummer Ohio, toen hij nog deel uitmaakte van de band Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Hij probeerde nogmaals zijn mening naar voren te brengen door middel van een protestlied. Ondanks de goede bedoelingen van Young en Nash had het nummer geen impact.
