Het is de derde single van het gelijknamige album Off the wall. Het nummer gaat over uitgaan en het achterlaten van je problemen: "When the world is on your shoulder/Gotta straighten up your act and boogie down."

Wist je dat? Het album "Off the wall" betekende Michael zijn doorbraak als soloartiest. Het album bracht diverse hits voort, waaronder de ballade "She's out of my life", de funky R&B/pop-nummers "Don't stop 'til you get enough" en "Rock with you", en de titelsong "Off the wall". Het album was daarmee een groot succes, al kon niemand op dat moment vermoeden dat Jacksons volgende album, Thriller, een nog veel groter succes zou worden.
