Major Lazer is het idee van de Amerikaanse dj en producer Diplo. Tussen 2008 en 2011 maakte ook DJ Switch deel uit van het project. Diplo scoort in 2011 zijn eerste hit in ons land met C’mon (Catch ‘Em By Surprise, waaraan ook Tiësto en Busta Rhymes meewerkten.
In 2012 scoort Major Lazer met Get Free zijn eerste hit in de Top 40. Watch Out For This, waar ook Busy Signal, The Flexican en FS Green meewerken, wordt één van de grote hits van 2013 en bereikt de zesde plaats.
In 2015 werkt Diplo samen met DJ Snake en Mø op de track Lean On, zijn derde hit. In april wordt het zijn eerste nummer 1-hit. Lean On weet, zeven weken na het terugtreden van nummer 1, opnieuw bovenaan de lijst te komen. Als Lean On eind september 28 weken in de Top 40 staat passeert het de 1000-puntengrens. En daarmee nestelt de track zich bij de tien grootste hits die ooit in de lijst hebben gestaan. Ondertussen heeft dan ook Powerful, de samenwerking met Ellie Goulding en Tarrus Riley, drie weken in de Top 40 gestaan. Eind 2015 verschijnt een remix van Light It Up als single van de Amerikaan, met daarop ook Nyla en Fuse ODG.
Van het album Piece Is The Mission Extended wordt Boom in 2016 een bescheiden Top 40-hit. Daaraan werken ook Moti, Ty Dolla $ign, Wizkid en Kranium mee. Dat de samenwerking met Mø en Justin Bieber is bevallen blijkt later die zomer als de track Cold Water verschijnt. Begin augustus wordt het de tweede nummer 1-hit voor Major Lazer.
Eind september levert Major Lazer de samenwerking met het Nederlandse duo Showtek af, Believer. Radio 538 roept het nummer uit tot Dance Smash.
In januari van 2017 verschijnt Run Up, een samenwerking met PartyNextDoor en Nicki Minaj dat later op nummer 16 in de Top 40 komt. In juni verschijnen zes nieuwe tracks op de EP Know No Better waarvan de titeltrack door Radio 538 wordt uitgeroepen tot Dance Smash. Met Rudimental maakt Major Lazer in juni 2018 de track Let Me Live.
In 2019 besluit Jillionaire op te stappen en Ape Drums wordt zijn vervanger. Ook verschijnt het vierde studioalbum Music Is The Weapon. Singles als Can't Take It From Me en Make It Hot doen niet veel maar dat is anders als Que Calor verschijnt, een samenwerking met J Balvin en El Alfa.
In het voorjaar van 2020 maakt de groep met Marcus Mumford het nummer Lay Your Head On Me. Van het album Music Is The Weapon dat later in 2020 verschijnt wordt Hell And High Water een populaire track. Eind maart 2021 brengen ze de track Titans uit. Dit is een samenwerking met Sia en Labrinth.
