In 2008 doet Liam Payne auditie bij de Britse X Factor, waar hij het nummer Fly Me To The Moon (van Frank Sinatra) zingt. Zonder resultaat, waarna hij in 2010 opnieuw auditie doet en één van de vijf leden van One Direction wordt. Het succes van One Direction groeit tot ongekende hoogtes. Payne schrijft veel nummers die op de vijf albums van de boyband verschijnen. Vanaf januari 2016 neemt One Direction een pauze zodat de leden, na het vertrek van Zayn nog vier, solo-activiteiten kunnen ontplooien.

Inmiddels heeft Liam in 2014 zijn eigen bedrijf, Hampton Music Limited, opgericht. In 2017 krijgt hij met zijn vriendin Cheryl Cole een zoon, Bear.

Liam Payne is de laatste One Direction-zanger die met een solo-single op de proppen komt. Samen met Quavo brengt hij in mei 2017 het nummer Strip That Down uit. Het wordt zijn solo-debuut in de Top 40. Een maand later is hij ook te horen op Get Low, de samenwerking met de Duitse dj Zedd. Vooruitlopend op de release van zijn debuutalbum wordt Bedroom Floor in oktober zijn volgende single.

Met Rita Ora levert Payne begin 2018 de titelsong van de film Fifty Shades Freed af, For You. 538 bekroont die single tot Alarmschijf. Ondertussen loopt zijn relatie met Cheryl op de klippen. Eind augustus verschijnt zijn eerste ep, First Time. Terwijl de titeltrack, een samenwerking met French Montana, in de Tipparade staat komen we zijn naam ook tegen op Polaroid, een nummer dat hij met de Britse dj en producer Jonas Blue en de Canadese zangeres Lennon Stella maakt. In september van 2019 verschijnt Stack It Up, een track met A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie waaraan ook Ed Sheeran meeschreef.

Op 8 april verschijnt Midnight, een samenwerking met dj en producer Alesso. In augustus 2021 lanceert hij de single Sunshine. De single is te horen in de animatiefilm Ron’s Gone Wrong.
