The Cure is opgericht in 1976 (toen nog Easy Cure) in Crawley, West-Sussex in het VK en bestond bij de oprichting uit Robert Smith (zang, gitaar), Michael Dempsey (bas), Porl Thompson (gitaar) en Lol Tolhurst (drums). In 1978 werden zowel het woord Easy uit de naam verwijderd alsmede Porl Thompson. Sindsdien heten ze The Cure en zijn er de nodige wisselingen geweest met als enige constante factor Robert Smith.



Hoogste hitnotering in de Top 40 was hun single "Lullaby" welke in 1989 de 9e plek bereikte.

Andere hits waren onder andere "A Forest", "Why Can't I Be You?" en "Boys Don't Cry".

Ze hebben inmiddels zo'n 27 miljoen albums verkocht en worden beschouwd als één van de

meest invloedrijke bands in de alternatieve rock en new wave.
