Is één van de eerste vrouwelijke rapgroepen. De groep bestaat uit Cheryl James (Salt), Sandra Denton (Pepa) en Latoya Hanson, die later vervangen is door Deidra Roper (DJ Spinderella).

In 1988 brengen ze het nummer Push It (oorspronkelijk een b-kant) uit. Het nummer werd geremixt door DJ Cameron Paul. Mede daardoor werd het nummer wereldwijd een hit, kregen de dames een Grammy-nominatie en braken ze internationaal door.

Na eerder de albums Hot, Cool And Vicious en A Salt With A Deadly Pepa te hebben uitgebracht werd het derde album genaamd Black Magic heel goed in Nederland verkocht. Het album bevat o.a. de hitsingle Let’s Talk About Sex. In Amerika werd de single niet veel gedraaid door de stations en dat terwijl de opbrengst van de single naar het Aids fonds ging.

Het album Very Necessary bevat o.a. de hits Shoop en Whatta Man (featuring En Vogue). Met hun nummer None Of Your Business, tevens afkomstig van dit album, scoren zij hun eerste Grammy Award wat hen ook nog eens de eerste winnende vrouwelijke rapgroep maakt.

Na een overstap naar platenmaatschappij Red Ant Records brengen ze het album Brand New uit. Dit album doet het niet zo goed als zijn voorganger, wat misschien ook wel te wijten is aan het faillissement van Red Ant Records vlak nadat het album werd uitgebracht. Alle promotie en marketing werd namelijk per direct gestopt.

In 2001 heeft Salt genoeg van de muziekindustrie en besluit zij de groep te verlaten. In 2002 verlaat ze de groep officieel. De vrouwen komen in 2006 weer samen om op te treden bij het jaarlijkse op VH1 uitgezonden evenement Hip Hop Honors.

In 2007 wordt de show The Salt-n-Pepa Show gestart op VH1. De serie gaat over de gebeurtenissen in het leven van de dames. Ook issues uit het verleden komen ter sprake en duiken de dames de opnamestudio weer in. Spinderella is ook te zien in een aantal afleveringen.

Ze treden nog af en toe op.
