Piet Veerman werd geboren in Volendam. Hij werd in 1964 bekend als zanger en gitarist van The Cats. Dankzij zijn bepalende stemgeluid heeft hij een belangrijk aandeel gehad in de vorming van de palingsound. Vanaf 1985 ging hij door met een solocarrière. Hij ontving meer dan dertig gouden platen.

Tijdens zijn Cats-periode in 1975 maakt Piet Veerman zijn eerste soloplaat. "Rollin on a river" De gelijknamige titelsong wordt op single uitgebracht en behaalt een Top 10 notering in de Top 40,

In 1985 zet Piet definitief een punt achter The Cats vanwege grote problemen aan zijn stembanden. Met "Sailing home" scoort hij de eerste plaats in de Top 40 en blijft daar vijf weken op staan. De elpee "Piet Veerman" die daarop volgt is in recordtijd platina. Daarna heeft hij nog enkele bescheiden hits maar het succes van Sailing home heeft hij niet meer kunnen evenaren.

Hij is nog steeds actief in de muziek maar doet het wel wat rustiger aan.
