Het nummer is afkomstig van het album Use Your Illusion I en werd uitgebracht in 1992.
Aan het nummer is jarenlang gewerkt door Axl Rose. Hij begon daarmee al in 1983 met in eerste instantie alleen de piano als begeleiding. Eind jaren 80 zei Tracii Guns dat het nummer wel af was, maar Axl vond dat er nog iets aan ontbrak. Nadat hij iedere noot van ieder instrument had afgeschreven, legde hij het stuk voor aan de andere leden. Die gaven te kennen dat ze het niks vonden. Na lang aandringen van Axl gaven de andere leden toch toe. En met zeer veel succes, want het nummer is enorm populair. Ook onder het publiek dat geen fan is van de band.
Deze rockballade duurt maar liefst bijna negen minuten met daarin het grootst aantal solominuten van alle radioversies die ooit in de Nederlandse Top 40 stonden.
In de Top 2000 staat het nummer ook altijd hoog in de lijst.
