Jahsey Dwayne Onfroy kende een moeilijke jeugd. Al op 6-jarige leeftijd stak hij een man neer die zijn moeder wilde aanvallen. Daarop moest hij een jeugdprogramma volgen en werd hij onder het toezicht van zijn oma geplaatst.

Onfroy zong in het kerkkoor en het koor van de school waar hij later werd weggestuurd omdat hij een andere leerling had aangevallen. Later zou hij nog meer geweldovertredingen begaan. Zijn muzieksmaak was vrij rauw met metal, hardrock maar ook wat rap. Ondertussen maakte hij zich toen wel het bespelen van piano en gitaar meester.

Na een jaar in de jeugdgevangenis vanwege wapenbezit maakt hij, in 2014, zijn eerste muzikale freestyles en neemt hij de naam XXXTentaction aan. Op SoundCloud plaatst hij niet veel later zijn eerste track, Vice City. Later dat jaar verschijnt The Fall, zijn eerste ep. Daarop kwam in 2016 een vervolg met Willy Wonka Was A Child Murderer. Als blijkt dat er waardering is voor zijn muziek besluit hij te stoppen met werken om zich volledig op de muziek te storten.

Met Look At Me scoort hij een hit in de Amerikaanse Hot 100 en weet hij ook de aandacht van Drake te trekken. De rapper zit op dat moment echter vanwege geweld weer in de gevangenis. Op 25 augustus 2017 verschijnt zijn eerste album, 17 dat in de Amerikaanse albumlijst de tweede plaats weet te bereiken. 7 maanden later volgt zijn tweede album, ?. Verschillende tracks doen het goed op streamingplatformen waarbij Sad! er in Nederland met kop en schouders bovenuit weet te steken. Die track is dan ook aangemerkt als de belangrijkste single van het album.

Op 18 juni 2018 wordt de rapper neergeschoten.Hij overlijdt aan die verwondingen. In het najaar van 2018 is hij te horen op een postume samenwerking met Lil Peep, die in 2017 overleed. XXXTentacion nam de teksten voor Falling Down, origineel Sunlight On Your Skin, in november van 2017 op in Londen. Eind oktober verschijnt Arms Around You, opnieuw een track met Lil Peep waarop ook Maluma en Swae Lee te horen zijn.
