Will Smith sloeg een studiebeurs af om les te gaan volgen aan het Massachusetts Institute Of Technology omdat hij zich wilde ontwikkelen in het rappen. Dat doet hij als eerste met zijn jeugdvriend Jeffrey Townes via het duo DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince. In 1987 verschijnt hun eerste album Rock The House. Privé maakte Smith wel wat fouten in het betalen van zijn belasting waardoor hij in 1990 officieel failliet wordt verklaard. NBC besluit niet veel later een tv-serie rond de karakters te bouwen: The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air. Tussen 1991 en 1993 scoort het duo vijf Top 40-hits met het thema van de serie, Yo Home To Bel Air, als grootste succes. Al vrij snel wordt daarna het talent van Smith zichtbaar en krijgt hij een aantal acteerrollen in grote films, waaronder Six Degrees Of Separation (1993) en Bad Boys (1995). Inmiddels loopt zijn huwelijk met Sheree Zampino, die hij in 1992 zijn ja-woord gaat, na drie jaar op de klippen. De twee kregen wel zoon Trey.

In 1997 trouwt hij met Jada Pinkett met wie hij later de kinderen Jaden en Willow krijgt. Dat jaar volgt ook de eerste van een reeks Men In Black-films waarin hij te zien is naast Tommy Lee Jones. Het thema van de film staat in dat najaar drie weken op nummer 2. In november volgt, vanwege dat succes, zijn eerste soloalbum Big Willie Style met daarop ook zijn vier volgende Top 40-hits waarvan Gettin’ Jiggy With It en Miami in de top 10 komen.

Zijn volgende Top 40-hit, Wild Wild West, is opnieuw afkomstig uit een film en brengt hem ook opnieuw in de top 3. De track krijgt een plek op zijn tweede solo-album Willennium en daarop staat ook zijn volgende Top 40-hit Will 2K. Zijn derde album, Born To Reign, wordt een minder groot succes en alleen Black Suits Comin’ (Nod Ya Head) krijgt een plekje in de Tipparade. Switch, dat op zijn vierde en vooralsnog laatste album Lost And Found komt, wordt in 2005 uiteindelijk zijn grootste succes in ons land.

In 2017 brengt hij met Get Lit voor het eerst in tien jaar weer een nieuwe single uit. Ook keert hij met DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince weer terug op het podium. In het voorjaar van 2018 rapt hij mee op Live It Up, de track die hij met Nicky Jam en Era Istrefi aflevert voor het wereldkampioenschap voetbal in Rusland.
