In het najaar van 1976 begint de Ierse band Feedback. De groep was een initiatief van Larry Mullen en hij kreeg versterking van Bono en The Edge. Als ook Adam Clayton zich bij de groep voegt is de basis voor een langdurige samenwerking ontstaan. Kortstondig als de groep The Hype en sinds 1978 als U2.
In 1982 komen we de band voor het eerst tegen in de Top 40 met I Will Follow, dat de twaalfde plaats van de lijst bereikt. Daarna volgt een reeks hits in de lijst. In 1995 werkt U2 samen met onder meer Brian Eno, in het project Passengers, dat één hit scoort met Miss Sarajevo.
In 2000 is de 27e U2-hit in de Top 40, Beautiful Day, hun eerste nummer 1-hit. Vrij snel daarna komt ook Elevation boven aan de hitlijst. The Saints Are Coming bereikt eind 2006 de eerste plaats van de Top 40 en wordt gevolgd door Window In The Skies, dat direct de vierde nummer 1-hit van de band wordt.
Na een afwezigheid van vier jaar scoort de groep in 2013 met Ordinary Love de 43e hit, die ook nog eens voor de 18e keer het predicaat Alarmschijf krijgt. De band leverde met het nummer een bijdrage aan de film Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom.
Begin 2014 verschijnt de single Invisible, waarvan per download door de Bank Of America één dollar wordt gestort op het RED-fonts ter bestrijding van aids, tbs en malaria. De actie levert ruim drie miljoen op. In het najaar komt het dertiende studioalbum, Songs Of Innocence, uit. Het album wordt gelanceerd in samenwerking met Apple, dat het album voor een beperkte periode gratis ter beschikking stelt. Van het album is The Miracle (Of Joey Ramone) de eerste single waarmee ze hun 41e hit in de Top 40 scoren. Later wint ook de track Every Breaking Wave aan populariteit.
In 2017 markeert U2 het 30-jarige jubileum van het album The Joshua Tree met een speciale tournee waar ze het album in z'n geheel live spelen. Ondertussen werken ze ook aan een nieuw album (Songs Of Experience) waarvan You're The Best Thing About Me in september van 2017 de eerste single wordt.
In 2018 tourt U2 met het album Songs Of Experience over de wereld en in oktober brengen ze opnieuw een bezoek aan de Ziggo Dome. In januari werd Summer Of Love de volgende single van het album.
In 2021 werken de heren met de track Your Song Saved My Life mee aan de soundtrack van de animatie film Sing 2. Bono zal zijn geanimeerde filmdebuut maken als de teruggetrokken rockster-leeuw Clay Calloway.

Deze release van U2 bestond uit een voorverpakt doosje met 3 cd-singles die elk een hit van het album "The Joshua Tree" bevatten. De voorkant van het doosje bestond uit een afdruk van de voorkant van de cd-single “With or Without You” met een sticker waarop het catalogusnummer 659 871 (dat gold voor het gehele cd-doosje) was afgedrukt.
