Het nummer wordt toegeschreven aan Mick Jagger en Keith Richards, maar de andere bandleden - en dan vooral Bill Wyman en Brian Jones - hebben ook meegeschreven.

In eerste instantie was het een rustig nummer, maar tijdens het oefenen werd het tempo steeds sneller. Brian Jones voegde daar zijn sitarspel aan toe, wat kenmerkend aan het nummer is.

Door een fout van de platenmaatschappij Decca werd de titel van het nummer in 1966 "Paint it, Black". Bij latere uitgaven werd de komma weggelaten.

In 1990 bracht men het nummer nog een keer uit, omdat het de titelsong was voor de televisieserie Tour Of Duty. De single had minder succes. Zo kwam het in de Amerikaanse lijsten niet zo hoog, maar in Nederland werd de single opnieuw een nummer 1-hit.
