Bart van der Weide en Dennis Huige kennen elkaar uit de band Vict’em. Als de groep in 1996 stopt gaat het tweetal onder de naam Racoon verder. Vrij snel komen ook Stefan de Kroon en Paul Bukkens bij de groep en in 1999 ziet Nederland hun kwaliteiten als ze optreden op Noorderslag.

Begin 2000 staat het eerste resultaat met Feel Like Flying in de Tipparade. In 2005 verschijnt het derde album van de groep, Another Day. Love You More (#3) en Laugh About It (#16) en Brother (#26) bereiken de Top 40. Twee jaar later is het tijd voor het album Liverpool Rain, waarvan No Mercy opnieuw een top 3-hit wordt.

Voor de film Alles Is Familie schrijft Racoon in 2012 met Oceaan voor het eerst met een Nederlandstalig nummer een hit. In december van 2013 is Shoes Of Lightning, het thema voor de jaarlijkse 3FM-actie Serious Request, hun twaalfde Top 40-notering.

In 2014 is het relatief stil rond de band als er wordt gewerkt aan een nieuw album, All In Good Time dat op 13 februari 2015 verschijnt. Een deel wordt opgenomen in de Londense Abbey Road studio's. Brick By Brick is de eerste single van het album en komt op nummer 18. Later verschijnen ook Guilty, Fun We Had en Young And Wise als singles. Op 10 maart 2017 brengt Racoon de ep Look Ahead uit met vijf nummers, waarvan Bring It On de eerste single is. In oktober verschijnt het album Look Ahead And Distance waarvan Soon in februari 2018 de nieuwe single wordt.

Begin 2020 komt de band via Het Is Al Laat Toch opnieuw met een Nederlandstalige single. In augustus volgt er met De Echte Vent opnieuw een Nederlandstalige track. Dat nieuwe Nederlandstalige album laat nog even op zich wachten, maar ze brengen in maart 2021 wel track nummer 3 uit, genaamd Hee Joh Jip. Begin september lanceren ze de opvolger Geef Je Hart Niet Zomaar Weg.
Met de single Tijd Verliezen brengen ze in februari hun eerste track van 2022 uit.
