Procol Harum

A Salty Dog is een album van de rockband Procol Harum, uitgebracht in juni 1969. Het heeft een ogenschijnlijk nautisch thema, gezien de afbeelding op de hoes (een bewerking van de afbeelding van een pakje Player's Navy Cut-sigaretten), afgewisseld met straight rock, blues en pop-items. A Salty Dog liet een lichte verandering van richting zien ten opzichte van zijn voorgangers, die thematisch minder obscuur waren. Het titelnummer zelf was het eerste Procolnummer waarin geluidseffecten gebruikt werden en een orkest te horen was.

Wist je dat? Het album was de eerste plaat geproduceerd door Matthew Fisher, die stopte met de band snel na het uitbrengen van het album. Het lied "A Salty Dog" werd gebruikt in de film Purple Haze uit 1983. Dit lied werd ook gecoverd door Transatlantic, op de 2-disc Special Edition van The Whirlwind. Het wordt gezongen door drummer Mike Portnoy. De titelsong staat ook op het in 2005 verschenen coveralbum Big Bang Theory van de groep Styx met Lawrence Gowan (zang).
