Deze uit de Verenigde Staten afkomstige jazz-, soul-, gospel- en r&b-zanger werd geboren op 8 mei 1951.
Zijn bekendheid kwam toen hij zich in 1972 als een van de zangers aansloot bij de groep Earth, Wind & Fire. Hij nam de falsetstukken voor zijn rekening.
In 1983 begon hij naast zijn activiteiten voor Earth, Wind & Fire aan zijn solocarrière.
Zijn debuutalbum Continuation kwam in 1983 uit. Zijn tweede soloalbum Chinese Wall werd geproduceerd door Phil Collins. Samen met Phil scoort hij zijn tot nu toe enige nummer 1-hit, Easy Lover uit 1985.
In 1986 kwamen de heren van Earth, Wind & Fire samen om in de studio te werken aan een nieuw album. Maurice White trok zich in de jaren 90 vanwege zijn ziekte terug uit de band. De overige leden gingen verder en worden aangevuld met sessiemuzikanten. Bailey‘s zoon Philip Duncan Bailey is nu ook een lid van de groep.
Zijn 11e soloalbum Soul On Jazz verscheen in 2002.
