In de jaren vijftig is hij bevriend met John Lennon en besluit hij te gaan spelen in de band The Quarryman. Die band groeit met George Harrison en Ringo Starr uit tot The Beatles. Lennon en McCartney schrijven de meeste nummers voor de band, vaak in de samenwerking waarin ze elkaars werk completeren. Yesterday is één van zijn meest bekende nummers en is later door een record aan artiesten opnieuw uitgevoerd. Als The Beatles

in de jaren zeventig stoppen scoort hij met Another Day zijn eerste solo-hit. Al vrij snel daarna ontstaat de band Wings, waarin hij samen met Denny Laine en zijn vrouw Linda speelt. Na een reeks hits, waaronder Mull Of Kintyre en Band On The Run, stopt Wings begin jaren tachtig. In 1979 maakt hij de Kerstklassieker Wonderful Christmastime en begint een indrukwekkende solo-loopbaan met hits als Ebony And Ivory (met Stevie Wonder en zijn grootste solo-hit) en The Girls Is Mine en Say Say Say (beide met Michael Jackson). Begin 1985 verschijnt We All Stand Together, dat nog steeds één van de meest geliefde getekende videoclips aller tijden is.

In 1993 staat McCartney met Hope Of Deliverance voor het laatst in de Top 40. In 1997 wordt hij door de Britse Koningin onderscheiden met de titel ‘Sir’.

In 2015 maakt McCartney twee nummers met Kanye West. Eerst is dat Only One en vrij snel daarna ook FourFiveSeconds, waarop ook Rihanna te horen is. Daarmee komt McCartney in februari van 2015 opnieuw in de Top 40. Een unieke prestatie, want hij is op dat moment de artiest met de langste periode tussen zijn eerste en laatste notering. Los van de Beatles staat zijn eerste notering op 20 maart 1971 in de Top 40; FourFiveSeconds volgt 2290 weken later. En dus overtreft Sir Paul McCartney David Bowie, die 2262 weken had zitten tussen zijn eerste en laatste Top 40-notering.

33 jaar na zijn laatste top 3-hit komt Paul McCartney opnieuw in de top 3 met FourFiveSeconds. Daarmee wordt hij, met een leeftijd van 72 jaar, de oudste act die ooit een top 3-hit heeft gescoord. Het nummer zorgt er ook voor dat hij, los van The Beatles en Wings, zijn hoogste positie ooit bereikt.
