Nick Rotteveel debuteert in 2012 in de DJ Mag Top 100 op de 17e plaats. De Nederlander had eerder dat jaar de dance-scene verrast met zijn track Toulouse. Begin 2013 werkt hij samen met Avicii op I Could Be The One. Het nummer wordt zijn eerste hit in de Top 40 en komt later op de zevende plaats terecht. Romero stijgt dat jaar naar de zevende plaats van de DJ Mag Top 100 en passeert daarmee dj’s als Afrojack, Dash Berlin, Skrillex en Deadmau5.

In 2014 neemt hij met Anouk de track Feet On The Ground op, waarmee hij kort na de release de derde plaats in de Beatport-hitlijst bereikt. Het nummer blijft steken in de Tipparade. In het najaar werkt hij samen met het duo Vicetone met de track Let Me Feel.

Na een relatief rustige periode laat Nicky Romero in 2016 weer met nieuwe tracks te komen. Het eerste wapenfeit in 2016 is een samenwerking met Nile Rodgers op Future Funk. Take Me, zijn samenwerking met Colton Avery, wordt door Radio 538 uitgeroepen tot Dance Smash.
