Khalid Robinson wordt in de vroege zomer van 2016 door Billboard gezien als ‘emerging artist’. Met zijn track Location bereikt hij begin 2017 de top 10 van de R&B-hitlijst, waarna hij een korte tour door de Verenigde Staten doet met 21 uitverkochte shows. Op 3 maart verschijnt zijn debuutalbum American Teen. Dat album komt direct in de top 10 van de Amerikaanse albumlijst. In augustus is hij te horen op de track Silence van Marshmello en op 1-800-273-8255 van Logic. Ook wordt zijjn eigen track, Young Dumb & Broke, populair.
In 2018 maakt hij voor de film Love, Simon met Normani Kordei de track Love Lies, dat zijn derde Top 40-hit wordt. In mei van dat jaar maakt hij met Shawn Mendes het nummer Youth. Met Martin Garrix levert hij een maand later de single Ocean af. In juli werkt hij met Halsey mee aan Eastside, dat het debuut van Benny Blanco is als uitvoerend artiest.
In februari levert hij met Talk, een track met Disclosure, een voorproefje af van zijn tweede album. Ook is hij te horen op Hurts 2B Human, de titeltrack van het achtste studioalbum van P!nk en Beautiful People, een track op het No.6 Collaborations Project-album van Ed Sheeran. In februari 2020 maakt hij met het Britse Disclosure de track Know Your Worth.
