Opgericht door zanger Mark Knopfler in 1977 scoort Dire Straits veel grote hits. In 1978 bereiken ze voor het eerst de Top 40 met de single Sultans Of Swing wat de 10de plaats haalt. Deze single is afkomstig van het eerste album simpelweg getiteld Dire Straits. In 1979 volgt het album Communique en de single Lady Writer. In 1980 stapt Knopfler's broer David uit de band en gaan ze verder als trio. In 1982 scoort de band een nummer 1-hit met Private Investigations. Door de jaren heen zijn er verschillende muzikanten in de band gekomen en hebben ook de band weer verlaten maar Knopfler blijft de zanger en blikvanger. In 1985 verschijnt Brothers In Arms wat een record breekt door 5 jaar onafgebroken in de album Top 100 te blijven staan. Ook is het de eerste release op compact disc. In 1988 verschijnt het compilatie album Money For Nothing en treedt de band op tijdens het Nelson Mandela concert. In 1991 verschijnt het laatste album van de band On Every Street. De single Calling Elvis wordt een grote hit en de band gaat weer op toernee. Dit resulteert in 1993 in het live album On The Night en de hit EP Encores. Mark vindt het echter mooi geweest en ondanks dat de band nooit officieel is ontbonden heeft hij na 1992 nooit meer de band opgetreden en gaat hij verder als solo artiest. De single Ticket To Heaven is in 1994 de laatste Top 40 hit voor de band.
