Soulzangeres Diane Earle Ross, bij ons beter bekend als Diana Ross werd geboren op 26 maart 1944 in Detroit, Michigan.
In 1959 vormde ze samen met Mary Wilson, Florence Ballard en Barbara Martin The Primettes. Toen ze in 1960 een contract kregen bij Motown werd in 1961 de naam veranderd in The Supremes en kort daarna verliet Barbara Martin de groep. De groep veranderde nog één keer van naam, Diana Ross and the Supremes. Florence Ballard werd ontslagen door Berry Gordy en Cindy Birdsong nam haar plaats in. In 1969 verliet Diana Ross de groep en ging ze solo verder.
In 1970 scoort ze haar eerste solo hit met Ain’t No Mountain High Enough. En maakt ze haar eerste stappen als actrice in de film Lady Songs The Blues. Ze ontvangt hiervoor een Oscarnominatie. Ze neemt een album op vol duetten met Marvin Gaye. Eind jaren 70 speelde ze de rol van Dorothy in de filmmusical The Wiz. Met het nummer A Brand New Day, afkomstig uit die film, scoort ze haar eerste nummer 1-hit in de Top 40.
Samen met Lionel Richie bracht ze de single Endless Love uit in 1981. Dit blijkt haar bestverkopende single uit haar carrière te zijn en haar laatste hit die ze scoort onder contract bij het Motownlabel. Bij het platenlabel RCA gaat ze verder, maar haar carrière krijgt een dip. The Bee Gees helpen haar uit haar dip door de hit Chain Reaction voor haar te schrijven. Door haar wisselende successen in de jaren 80 keerde ze aan het eind van de 80 toch terug naar het platenlabel Motown.
In oktober 2009 was Diana Ross twee dagen de hoofdact van Symphonica In Rosso in het GelreDome in Arnhem.
Ze heeft in haar carrière vele prijzen in ontvangst mogen nemen, zoals een Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, Kennedy Center Honors en Golden Globe. In 2016 kreeg ze uit handen van President Obama de Presidential Medal Of Freedom.
