Charlie Puth plaatst vooral akoestische versies van hits op zijn YouTube-kanaal. Het brengt hem in januari 2012 op de Amerikaanse tv, waar hij Need You Now (origineel van Lady Antebellum) uitvoert.

Inmiddels heeft de in New Jersey geboren zanger een platencontract bij Atlantic en brengt hij begin 2015 zijn eerste single, Marvin Gaye, uit. Daarop is ook Meghan Trainor te horen. Puth werkt ondertussen voor Trey Songz, Jason Derulo en Lil Wayne en neemt met Wiz Khalifa de track See You Again op voor de soundtrack van Furious 7, dat in de Top 40 meteen een top 3-hit wordt voor Puth.

Met Meghan Trainor maakt hij de track Marvin Gaye en verschijnt op 29 januari 2016 zijn debuutalbum Nine Track Mind, waarvan One Call Away, We Don't Talk Anymore (met Selena Gomez) en Dangerously als singles worden uitgekozen. Met Attent!on verschijnt in april 2017 een nieuwe single als voorloper van zijn tweede album Voicenotes. Daarop staan ook de tracks How Long en Done For Me.

Charlie Puth duikt in het voorjaar van 2020 op als hij met Lennon Stella het nummer Summer Feelings maakt. Ook maakt hij dan met Gabby Barrett een nieuwe versie van haar hit I Hope. In 2021 werkt hij samen met niemand minder dan Elton John aan de single After All. Halverwege januari 2022 dropt hij de single Light Switch.
