Robert Nesta Marley wordt geboren op 6 februari 1945 en wordt tegenwoordig gezien als de grootste reggaezanger ooit.

Begint jaren zeventig breekt hij met zijn begeleidersband The Wailers door met hits als I Shot The Sherrif, Stir It Up en Get Up Stand Up.

In Nederland is No Woman No Cry in 1975 zijn eerste hit. In 1977 verschijnt het album Exodus wat één van zijn best verkochte albums is. Datzelfde jaar wordt bij Marley kanker vastgesteld en ontsnapt hij aan een aanslag op zijn leven. In 1979 scoort hij met de live versie van Stir It Up een grote hit in de Top 40. In 1980 verschijnt het album Uprising en de single Could You Be Loved bereikt bijna de eerste plaats maar blijft op 2 steken. In september van dat jaar geeft Marley een laatste concert. De kanker is inmiddels verspreid en doktoren kunnen niets meer voor hem doen. Hij overlijdt in Miami op 11 mei 1981. Hij was slechts 36 jaar oud.

Na zijn overlijden wordt de status van de reggaezanger nog groter. Het compilatie album Legend wordt in 1984 uitgebracht en is met 25 miljoen verkochte exemplaren het best verkochte reggae album ooit. One Love bereikt de 2de plaats in de Top 40 en is Marleys grootste hit.
