Zweedse popgroep uit Stockholm, opgericht in 1972: Anni-Frid “Frida” Lyngstad (geb. 15-11-1945; zang), Agnetha Fältskog (geb. 5-4-1950; zang), Björn Ulvaeus (geb. 24-4-1945; gitaar) en Benny Andersson (geb. 16-12-1945; toetsen). Ze zijn allemaal in Zweden geboren, behalve Frida, zij ziet het levenslicht in Noorwegen.
De naam ABBA is een acroniem van de voornamen van de leden. Benny is dan lid van The Hep Stars (1964-'69) en Björn van The Hootenanny Singers. Grote doorbraak komt in 1974 met het winnen van het Eurovisie Songferstival met Waterloo. Björn gehuwd met Agnetha (1971-'79) en Benny getrouwd met Frida (1978-'81). De groep wordt in 1982 ontbonden.
In datzelfde jaar concentreren Björn en Benny zich samen met musicalcomponist Tim Rice op de productie van Chess. Het door Elaine Paige en Barbara Dickson gezongen I Know Him So Well en het door Murray Head uitgevoerde One Night In Bangkok levert twee grote hits op. De musical Mamma Mia!, gebaseerd op de hits van ABBA, is op 6 april 1999 in het Prince Edward-theater in de Londense wijk West End in première gegaan.
