Winston Foster werd geboren in Jamaica op 15 januari 1956. Zijn artiestennaam Yellowman gebruikt hij omdat hij albino is. Hij is ook wel bekend onder de naam King Yellowman.
De muziek die hij maakt is dub reggae en dancehall. Hij verwierf daar bekendheid mee, doordat hij eind jaren 70 The Tastee Talent Contest won. In deze wedstrijd moet de deelnemer dj’s toasten, dit is een reggaevorm van rappen. In 1981 tekende hij zijn platencontract bij het grote Amerikaanse CBS Records. Kenmerkend handelsmerk van hem is zijn zelfspot en humor.
Na een ingrijpende operatie in 1985, waar vanwege kanker een groot deel van zijn kaak werd verwijderd, ondervind hij wel beperkingen bij het zingen en articuleren. Dit weerhoudt hem echter niet op te treden. Hij is nog steeds populair en heeft wereldwijd een trouwe schare fans.
