Mikey Goldsworthy, EmreTurkmen en Noel Leeman vormen de band Years & Years in 2010. Al vrij snel krijgen ze versterking van Olly Alexander die toevallig wordt gespot door Mikey als hij hem hoort zingen onder de douche. In 2012 verschijnt hun debuutsingle I Wish I Knew en wordt een jaar later opgevolgd door Traps. Ondertussen besluit Leeman de band te verlaten.
In 2014 verschijnen de singles Real en Take Shelter en werken ze samen met de Belgische dj en producer The Magician aan het nummer Sunlight dat in België een top 10-hit wordt en in de Top 40 tot nummer 22 weet te komen.
Het drietal wordt door de BBC uitgeroepen tot veelbelovende act in 2015. King is in februari 2015 hun tweede Top 40-hit, die later wordt gevolgd door Shine dat in de Tipparade blijft steken. In de zomer verschijnt het album Communion, waarvan ook de single Desire afkomstig is. Die track wordt eind augustus door 538 uitgeroepen tot Alarmschijf. In het vroege voorjaar wordt Worship hun volgende single terwijl ze vrijwel tegelijkertijd ook een nieuwe versie en video van Desire uitbrengen met Tove Lo. Met Meteorite levert het trio een bijdrage aan de soundtrack bij de film Bridget Jones's Baby.
Na een relatief stille periode rond de Britse band keren ze in maart 2018 terug met de track Sanctify. Die track en ook If You're Over Me verschijnen als voorloper van hun tweede album Palo Santo. In november is Years & Years te horen op Play, een samenwerking met Jax Jones.
In maart 2021 maakt de band bekend dat Years & Years voortaan in een andere vorm doorgaat. Zo zal Olly Alexander solo doorgaan. Godsworthy zal nog wel live te zien zijn als vaste bassist. Türkmen gaat zich meer focussen op het schrijven en produceren van muziek. Met Starstruck brengt Olly zijn eerste solo nummer uit in april 2021.
