Op 3 juli 1998 ontstaat Westside als nieuwe Ierse boyband. Omdat die naam al bestond werd de naam snel veranderd in Westlife. Nicky Byrne had zelf als alternatief ook Westhigh op tafel gegooid.

De groep kreeg een springplank naar succes door veelvuldig in de voorprogramma’s van Boyzone en de Backstreet Boys te staan. Swear It Again, hun eerste single, schiet in 1999 naar de eerste plaats van de Britse en Ierse hitlijsten. In ons land komt de track tot nummer 23.

In 2000 staat Westlife met My Love voor het eerst in de top 10. In 2001 gebeurt dat voor een tweede keer als Uptown Girl, een cover van de hit van Billy Joel, twee weken op nummer 3 staat. Dat nummer wordt hun grootste succes in ons land. In het vroege voorjaar van 2004 maakt Brian McFadden bekend de groep te verlaten om meer tijd voor zijn familie te hebben. In 2005 scoort hij nog een bescheiden solosucces (met Real To Me). Na 13 achtereenvolgende Westlife-hits lukt het de band niet om een volgend succes te scoren.

In 2011 stoppen ze, na 13 jaar, de samenwerking met Syco Music. Later in 2011, op 19 oktober, stopt Westlife. De leden willen solo verder.

In oktober 2018 maakt Westlife bekend dat ze weer bij elkaar gaan worden. Een nieuwe tournee en nieuwe muziek komen dan op de radar en in januari van 2019 is Hello My Love de eerste single van de groep.
