Na in verschillende schoolbandjes te hebben gespeeld wint Roel van Velzen met de groep Goldfish in 1999 de Heineken Student Music Award. Hij ging werken bij de Crazy Piano’s. Nadat hij de kans krijgt om samen te werken met onder meer John Ewbank verschijnt in 2006 zijn eerste single, Baby Get Higher.

In 2007 verschijnt zijn debuutalbum Unwind, waarvan Burn en Deep worden uitgeroepen tot Alarmschijf. Voor de film Zomerhitte maakt hij het nummer When Summer Ends, dat uitgroeit tot zijn grootste hit in de Top 40. De track komt ook op zijn tweede album, Take Me In And Hear Me Out, dat in 2009 uitkomt. On My Way, Lovesong, Broken Tonight en Take Me In worden bescheiden hits.

Voor het tv-programma The Voice Of Holland bedenkt hij de ‘blind auditions’, waarbij de coaches de deelnemers in de eerste ronde alleen horen. Van Velzen is drie seizoenen lang één van de coaches.

In 2012 verschijnt zijn derde studioalbum, The Rush Of Life. De titeltrack en Sing Sing Sing komen in de Top 40, maar blijven steken in de onderste helft.

In 2015 is Van Velzen terug met Call It Luck, dat hij schrijft na zijn reis door Congo en waarin ook de Hibby GB’s, een Masaï-koor uit Kenia, te horen zijn. In mei wordt de single opgevolgd door If The World's Coming To An End. Beide nummers verschijnen vooruitlopend op het vierde album van VanVelzen, Call It Luck. Daarvan verschijnt ook de track Phoenix als voorloper. Eind 2015 brengt Van Velzen met Feels Like Coming Together een kerstnummer uit. In 2018 staat Roel VanVelzen op Vrienden Van Amstel Live. Met onder meer Marco Borsato levert hij een bijdrage aan de single Vrienden. In november 2019 verschijnt er met Opposite Lover ook weer een solotrack van de zanger.

The Blessed Days is de titelsong van de Nederlandse film Soof, met in de hoofdrollen, Lies Visschedijk, Fedja van Huêt en Dan Karaty, draait vanaf 12 december 2013 in de Nederlandse bioscopen.

Deze film is geregisseerd door Antoinette Beumer en geinspireerd op de Volkskrant-columns van Sylvia Witteman.
