Met wat hulp van Sean (Puff Daddy) Combs krijgt de muzikale loopbaan van Usher vorm met de release van zijn tweede album My Way in 1997. Daarvoor waren al enkele singles verschenen en het debuutalbum Usher.

In 1998 verschijnt de Amerikaan met You Make Me Wanna voor het eerst in de Top 40. Van het album Confessions komt de single Yeah! (met Ludacris en Lil’ John). Daarmee scoort Usher zijn negende hit in de Top 40 en zijn eerste nummer 1-notering.

Inmiddels heeft Usher 19 hits gescoord in de Top 40, waarvan DJ Got Us Falling In Love (2010, samen met Pitbull) de meest succesvolle was. Het album UR, dat voor 2014 gepland stond, wordt uitgesteld omdat Usher niet tevreden is met het resultaat.

In april van 2015 bereikt Don't Look Back, de track die hij samen met Martin Garrix maakte, de Top 40.

In 2020 is hij te horen op Too Much, een track met Imanbek en Marshmello.
