In 2007 spelen Rob Resnick en Cal Shapiro voor het eerst samen in Boston, waar ze elkaar leerden kennen op een shoolfeestje. De twee komen samen te werken in de groep The Ride, een studentenbandje op de Tufts universiteit in Medford.
Na de schooltijd gaan ze als Timeflies nummers maken die duidelijk inde smaak vallen als ze deze op YouTube plaatsen. In het najaar van 2011 brengen ze met The Scotch Tape hun debuutalbum uit en het tijdschrift Vanity Far noemt de twee al gauw ‘musical masterminds’. Later herkent ook Billboard het talent van de twee en noemt ze al snel een act om in de gaten te houden.
Begin 2013 start hun eigen platenlabel, Forty8Fifty, waar I Cnoose U hun eerste single wordt. Later nam ook Fedde Le Grand het nummer onder handen. In het voorjaar van 2014 verschijnt het album After Hours, waaraan ook T-Pain, Fabolous en Mike Posner een bijdrage leveren.
De eerste single van hun derde album (Just For Fun) wordt Worse Things Than Love , en daarop is ook Natalie La Rose te horen. Met Once In A While, dat in 2016 verschijnt, scoren ze hun eerste Top 40-hit.
