The oorspronkelijke Move bestond uit:
Carl Wayne: zang

Roy Wood: gitaar, zang

Trevor Burton: gitaar, zang

Chris 'Ace' Kefford: basgitaar, zang

Bev Bevan: drums, zang

De groep heeft diverse wisselingen gehad tijdens hun bestaan. Zo heeft o.a. Jeff Lynne van ELO ook deel uitgemaakt van de groep. The Move voor het grootste deel van hun carrière geleid door gitarist, zanger en songwriter Roy Wood. Hij schreef alle Britse singles van de groep en zong vanaf 1968 de leadzang op veel nummers, hoewel Carl Wayne tot 1970 de belangrijkste leadzanger was.

De groep heeft in Nederland 6 Top 40 hit gescoord waarvan Flowers in the rain uit 1967 de grootste was met een 7e plaats als hoogste notering.
In de jaren zeventig nam het succes af en stapte Roy Wood over naar Electric Light Orchestra. De groep bleef daarna wel bestaan maar scoorde geen grote hits meer.
