William Adams (Will.I.Am) en Allan Pineda (apl.de.ap) kennen elkaar van school en beginnen eind jaren tachtig samen te rappen. Als ze na een paar jaar de aandacht weten te trekken van Eazy-Z krijgen ze, als Atban Klann, een platencontract. Het album Grass Roots wordt echter nooit uitgebracht als Eazy-E komt te overlijden. In 1995 veranderen ze hun naam via Black Eyed Pods in Black Eyed Peas als ook Taboo zich bij de groep voegt. Behind The Front is in 1998 het eerste Black Eyed Peas-album, dat in 2000 wordt opgevolgd door Bridging The Gap. Daarvan komt Request + Line, waarop ook Macy Gray te horen is, in de Tipparade.

Als ook Fergie zich bij de Peas voegt wordt hun derde album, Elephunk, de grote doorbraak. Met Where Is The Love scoren ze direct een nummer 1-hit in 2003. Ook de drie daaropvolgende singles van het album, Shut Up, Hey Mama en Let’s Get It Started komen in de Top 40.

Kort voor de release van album nummer 4, Monkey Business, komt Don’t Phunk With My Heart in de Top 40 tot nummer 2 en ook Don’t Lie en My Humps zijn in de hoogste regionen van de lijst terug te vinden.

Na Mas Que Nada, een uitstapje met Sergio Mendes dat ze in ons land voor de tweede keer op nummer 1 brengt, wordt I Gotta Feeling in 2009 hun grootste succes. Het nummer staat een half jaar in de lijst, waarvan twee weken op nummer 1. Het nummer is afkomstig van het vijfde album The E.N.D. (The Energie Never Dies). Vrij snel daarna verschijnt ook album zes, The Beginning. Sindsdien wordt er gespeculeerd over een zevende album van de Black Eyed Peas. In de zomer van 2016 verschijnt een nieuwe versie van hun eerste hit, #Wheresthelove, waaraan een keur van artiesten meewerkt.

In 2019 verbouwen ze Rhythm Of The Night, origineel een hit van Corona uit 1994, tot Ritmo in een samenwerking met J Balvin.
