Deze uit Schotland afkomstige popgroep werd opgericht in 1986 door Johhny McElhone (basgitaar), Ally McErlaine (gitaar) en Sharleen Spiteri (zangeres). De groepsnaam is afkomstig uit de film Paris, Texas van Wim Wenders uit 1984.

In 1989 komt hun eerste album uit genaamd Southside. Hun debuut single I Don’t Want A Lover werd direct een internationale hit.

De twee volgende albums deden het minder goed. Ze maken een comeback in 1997 met het album White On Blonde. De singles Say What You Want en Black Eyed Boy zijn afkomstig van dit album.

Hun best verkopende album tot nu toe is hun vijfde album The Hush uit 1999. Hitsingles als In Our Lifetime en Summer Son zijn afkomstig van dit album.

In 2000 verscheen The Greatist Hits met als extra drie nieuwe nummers, waarvan Inners Smile ook in de Nederlandse Top 40 terecht kwam.

In 2008 start zangeres Sharleen Spiteri een solocarrière.

Nadat Ally McErlain, in 2009, een zware hersenbloeding overleeft besluit de band weer samen te komen.

In 2013 komen ze met hun achtste studioalbum The Conversation.

Om hun 25 jarig jubileum te vieren brengen ze het verzamelalbum Texas 25.

Na een aantal wijzigingen in de band in de loop der jaren zijn nu de vaste bandleden ,naast de leden van het eerste uur, Eddie Campbell, Tony McGoven, Michael Bannister en Ross McFarlane.
