De inmiddels 44-jarige Amerikaanse zangeres Sophie Ellis-Bextor maakt met haar nummer Murder On The Dancefloor na tweeëntwintig jaar een re-entry in de Nederlandse Top 40, maar ook in diverse andere buitenlandse hitlijsten. Zij dankt haar herwonnen succes aan een expliciete naaktscène in de film Saltburn.
Het psychologisch drama Saltburn ging op 31 augustus 2023 in wereldpremière op het filmfestival van Telluride in de Amerikaanse staat Colorado en vertelt het verhaal van Oliver Quick, een jongen uit een arbeidersmilieu in Merseyside die aan de Universiteit van Oxford studeert. Op een zekere dag ontmoet hij Felix, die hem uitnodigt voor een zomer in Saltburn, het landgoed van zijn excentrieke familie. Op deze locatie danst Oliver in de laatste scène volledig naakt door het huis op de tonen van Murder On The Dancefloor.
Door de passage in deze film heeft het nummer zich kennelijk ook populair gemaakt bij de vermoedelijk jongere kijker, want het ging in januari viraal op TikTok.
De zangeres reageerde in november al op het gebruik van haar nummer in de film. "Het is grappig, want als je wordt gevraagd of een liedje ergens in gebruikt mag worden, krijg je altijd een kleine samenvatting of een ruw idee van de plaatsing", vertelde ze aan Pink News. "Ik las in het kort hoe het gebruikt zou worden, maar ik had uiteraard niet het volledige verhaal doorgenomen op dat punt."
Het is overigens niet de eerste keer dat een oud nummer opeens weer populair wordt door een serie of film. In 2022 werd het nummer Running Up That Hill van Kate Bush opnieuw een wereldhit doordat het gebruikt werd in de Netflixserie Stranger Things.
