Het originele nummer is geschreven door Ed Cobb en gezongen door Gloria Jones in 1964; het Engelse duo Soft Cell scoorde er in 1981 een grote hit mee.
Soft Cell heeft het nummer wat trager gemaakt en heeft er, door synthesizers en een drumcomputer te gebruiken in plaats van elektrische gitaren en blazers, de typische 80’s sound aan toegevoegd. Het legde de groep geen windeieren: in 17 landen scoorden ze een nummer 1-hit en het nummer stond 9 weken in de Nederlandse Top 40 met een 5e plek als hoogste notering.
