Snow Patrol is de groep die Gary Lightbody in 1994 al begon, maar eigenlijk pas in 2005 vaste vorm gaf met Paul Wilson, Nathan Connolly, Tom Simpson en Jonny Quinn.

In 2003 verschijnt het eerste commerciële album Final Straw, waarvan Run (in 2005) slechts een bescheiden notering in de Tipparade kreeg.

In 2006 is Chasing Cars, afkomstig van het album Eyes Open, een stuk toegankelijker voor een breed publiek. Het nummer wordt hun eerste notering in de Top 40 en komt tot de 24e plaats. Shut Your Eyes, eveneens van dat album, overtreft dat succes een jaar later door op nummer 14 te komen.

In 2008 is Take Back The City de eerste single van het nieuwe (vijfde) Snow Patrol-album A Hundred Million Suns. De opvolger, Crack The Shutters (#14), wordt Alarmschijf en hun tweede Top 40-hit. Vrij kort daarna verschijnt het album Up To Now, een verzamelaar met de grootste hits van de groep. Just Say Yes wordt een nummer 1-hit. De single staat drie weken bovenaan de Top 40.

De groep grijpt de gelegenheid aan om ook Run opnieuw uit te brengen. Wat in 2005 niet lukte, gebeurt nu wel met de single; een 22e plaats in de Top 40.

In 2011 verschijnt het album Fallen Empires. Het levert de groep met Called Out In The Dark een tweede top 10-hit op. In The End doet het, met een bescheiden 35e plaats, als 7e hitnotering, een stuk minder. Sinds begin 2012 heeft de band geen hit meer gescoord.

In 2014 verschijnt er met I Won’t Let You Go nieuw materiaal van de Britse band. Het nummer maakt deel uit van de soundtrack bij de film Divergent. De band is in de periode daarvoor uitvoerig in de studio geweest om te werken aan een nieuw album dat uiteindelijk in mei 2018 verschijnt. De track Don't Give In verschijnt in maart als voorloper.
