Deze uit het Verenigd Koninkrijk afkomstige rockband is opgericht in 1994 door Deborah Anne Dyer (Skin), Martin Ivor Kent (Ace), Mark Richardson en Richard Keith Lewis (Cass). De naam Skunk Anansie is een samenvoeging van Skunk, wat stinkdier betekent, en Anansie, dat zijn betekenis ontleent aan een spin uit Akann volksverhalen uit Ghana.

Met Little Baby Swastikka pakten ze hun eerste succes. Het nummer wordt opgepikt door een Brits radiostation en komt hoog op de playlist. Het album waar deze hit op staat, Paranoid & Sunburnt, komt uit in 1995 en het grote succes volgt.

De single Hedonism uit 1997 is met positie 6 tot nu toe het succesvolste nummer in de Nederlandse Top 40.

In 2001 gaat de band uit elkaar, omdat Skin meer haar weg wilde volgen. Een solocarrière volgt, maar ze haalt nooit het succes als dat ze deed met Skunk Anansie.

In 2009 komen ze met een Best Of-album inclusief wat nieuw materiaal. Ze besluiten ook weer te gaan toeren en doen ook Nederland aan.

In 2011 komen ze met twee singles voor de film Sucker Punch.

In januari 2016 verscheen hun zesde studio album Anarchytecture.
