In 1966 richtte Carlos Santana samen met bassist David Brown en toetsenist Gregg Rolie de Santana Blues Band op. Hoewel de band de naam van Carlos Santana droeg (het was van de muzikantenvakbond verplicht om de band naar de muzikale leider te noemen) was het meer een collectief zonder leider. Na verloop van tijd werd de naam ingekort tot Santana en op 16 juni 1968 maakte de band zijn debuut in de Fillmore (a historic music venue in San Francisco, California).

Anderhalf jaar later scoort de groep met Jin-Go-Lo-Ba voor het eerst een hit in Nederland. Andere bekende nummers van Santana zijn The Healer (met John Lee Hooker), Samba Pa Ti en Maria Maria (met The Product G&B). In 2005 scoren de heren, dit maal samen met Steven Tyler, met Just Feel Better de 16e notering in de Top 40.

In 2014 verschijnt het 22e studioalbum van Santana, Corazon. Daarnaast levert de band een bijdrage aan het FIFA-album voor het WK, dat in Brazilië wordt georganiseerd. Aan Dar Um Jeito (We Will Find A Way) werkten ook Wyclef Jean, Avicii en Alexandre Pires mee.
