Als Ricky Martin in Puerto Rico wat bekendheid krijgt via tv-commercials doet hij auditie voor een boyband, Menudo. Daar werd hij eerst afgewezen omdat hij te klein was. Omdat hij bleef volhouden kreeg hij in 1984 een plek in de groep. Na elf albums besluit hij in de zomer van 1989, op 17-jarige leeftijd, de groep te verlaten. Hij krijgt een aantal rollen in tv-series maar de muziek blijft trekken. Als hij een contract kan tekenen vergeet hij de kleine lettertjes te lezen, waar in stond vermeld dat hij voor ieder verkocht album slechts één cent kreeg. In november 1991 verschijnt zijn titelloze Spaanstalige debuutalbum., dat eem vervolg krijgt de albums Me Amarás en A Medio Vivir. Op dat laatste album staat ook Maria, het nummer dat in 1997 zijn eerste Top 40-hit in ons land wordt.

In 1998 wordt La Copa De La Vida, afkomstig van zijn album Vuelve, gekozen tot het officiële thema van het wereldkampioenschap voetbal in Frankrijk. Daarmee bereikt hij dat jaar opnieuw de top 10 in ons land.

In 1999 besluit de zanger een breder publiek aan te gaan spreken met ook Engelstalig materiaal. Om die nieuwe start te markeren brengt hij opnieuw een titelloos studioalbum uit. Daarop staat zijn derde hit, Livin’ La Vida Loca, dat zijn eerste Alarmschijf wordt. Van dat album komen ook She’s All I Ever Had, Shake Your Bob-Bon en Private Emotion (met Meja). Op zijn zesde album Sound Loaded, dat in 2000 verschijnt, staan de hits She Bangs en zijn eerste top 3-hit Nobody Wants To Be Lonely (met Christina Aguilera).

Na twee Engelstalige albums maakt Martin in 2003 met Almas Del Silencio weer een Spaanstalige schijf. Daarvan wordt Jaleo dat jaar een bescheiden Top 40-notering. Zijn achtste album Life, dat in 2005 verschiijnt, is min of meer een afscheid. I Don’t Care, waarop ook Fat Joe en Amerie te horen zijn, wordt zijn tiende hit in ons land. De zanger besluit het rustiger aan te doen en werkt ondertussen aan een biografie, Me, die in 2010 verschijnt.

In 2012 schuift Ricky Martin aan als één van de coaches bij The Voice Australia, dat in 2014 een vervolg krijgt via The Voice Mexico.

Dat Ricky Martin in 2016 nog steeds populair is blijkt met de release van Vente Pa’ Ca, de track die hij in november aflevert met de Colombiaanse zanger Maluma.
