Anthony Kiedis, Michael (Flea) Balzary, Hillel Slovak en Jack Irons vormen op de middelbare school een bandje leren elkaar op de middelbare school kennen. Wat begon als Tony Flow And The Miraculously Majestic Masters werd Red Hot Chili Peppers, dat werd gezien als een bandje voor feesten en partijen. In november 1983 tekent de band een contract voor zeven albums. Omdat echter Irons en Slovak juist daarvoor met een ander project waren gestart moesten Kiedis en Balzary op zoek naar vervangers.

In de zomer van 1984 verschijnt hun titelloze debuutalbum, dat in 1985 met Freaky Styley een vervolg krijgt. Als in 1986 drummer Cliff Martinez wordt ontslagen keert Jack Irons terug bij de band. Een jaar eerder had ook Hillel Slovak zich weer bij de band gevoegd. Kiedis en Slovak zijn in die periode al geregeld onder invloed van verdovende middelen. Op 25 juni 1988 overlijdt Slovak op 26-jarige leeftijd. Na dat overlijden vond Jack Irons dat hij niet in een groep kon werken waarvan bandleden kwamen te overlijden. Later zou John Frusciante zich bij de band voegen. Chad Smith wordt zijn vervanger.

Als de Peppers in 1990 een contract tekenen bij Warner Bros werken ze zes maanden aan een nieuw album, Blood Sugar Sex Magik met daarop hun internationale doorbraak Under The Bridge waarmee ze in 1992 drie weken op de eerste plaats van de Top 40 staan. In mei 1992 verlaat Joe Frusciante, kort voor een optreden in Japan, de groep. Hij laat zich behandelen voor een drugsverslaving en keert in 1998 weer terug bij de band.

Met Californication (2000), By The Way (2002), Dani California en Show (Hey Oh) (beide 2006) scoort de band vier top 10-hits in de Top 40.

In januari 2010 keert de band terug op het podium met Josh Klinghoffer als gitarist. Op dat moment wordt hij ook aangekondigd als de vervanger van Frusciante. Op dat moment werken de Peppers aan hun tiende album, I’m With You, dat in augustus 2011 verschijnt. Van dat album wordt The Adventures Of Rain Dance Maggie hun 14e (en laatste) Top 40-hit.

Op 17 juni 2016 verschijnt het elfde album The Getaway, waarvan Dark Necessities als voorloper verschijnt als single.
