Net als veel andere tieners leerde Austin Richard Post gitaarspelen via de game Guitar Hero. Als 16-jarige leert hij productiekneepjes in Fruity Loops en al snel maakt hij zijn eerste mixtape. Later werkt bij met Trocon Roberts en Rex Kudo aan de track White Iverson. Die track plaatst hij op SoundCloud en in juli verschijnt er ook een video bij de track. Binnen een maand tikt de track een miljoen views aan en is de interesse van platenmaatschappijen gewekt. In augustus van 2015 tekent hij een contract bij Republic Records. Sindsdien werkte hij met onder meer Young Thug, 50 Cent en Kanye West. Justin Bieber nodigt hem uit om het voorprogramma van zijn Purpose World Tour te doen. In december van 2016 brengt hij zijn debuutalbum Stoney uit waarop ook Bieber te horen is op de track Deja Vu. In het voorjaar van 2017 wordt Congratulations (met Quavo) zijn eerste top 10-hit in de Verenigde Staten.
In september van 2017 blijkt pas echt hoe groot Post Malone is als Rockstar wereldwijd naar de bovenste regionen van de streaminglijsten schiet. In ons land komt Rockstar tot nummer 4 in de Top 40. In februari van 2018 maakt hij, samen met Ty Dolla $ign, de track Psycho. Eind april breekt hij met zijn Beerbongs & Bentleys verschillende records. Kort na de release groeit Better Now uit tot één van de populaire tracks. Halverwege mei is hij met Preme te horen op de track Jackie Chan in de versie van Tiësto en Dzeko. Voor de film Spider Man - Into The Spider Verse maakt hij met Swae Lee het nummer Sunflower dat in oktober 2018 Alarmschijf is. In het voorjaar van 2019 wordt met Stay als volgende single teruggegrepen naar het Beerbongs & Bentleys-album.
