Deze uit de Verenigde Staten afkomstige punkband begon in 1983. Nadat ze verschillende bandnamen en samenstellingen van leden hadden, werd in 1986 dan de officiële naam The Offspring met zanger en gitarist Dexter Holland, gitarist Noodles Wasserman, bassgitarist en zanger Greg Kriesel en drummer Ron Welty.

Met hun single Come Out And Play, afkomstig van hun derde album Smash uit 1994, breken zij wereldwijd door. Ook de singles Self Esteem en Gotta Get Away van dit album doen het goed. Hierdoor gaat ook het vorige album Ignition weer over de toonbank.

In 1995 komt hun eerste album nog een keer uit op Nitro Records, het platenlabel van Dexter.

The Offspring sloot in 1996 een contract af met Columbia Records na een ruzie met Epitaph. Het volgende album Ixnay on the Hombre komt begin 1997 uit. Het album werd niet echt een succes. Later dat jaar beginnen Dexter en Jello Biafra hun eigen fonds, genaamd FSU.

Het vijfde album Americana verscheen in 1998. De hit Pretty Fly is onder andere afkomstig van dat album.

Ron Welty stapt in 2001 uit de band en wordt uiteindelijk vervangen door Adam Willard, die op zijn beurt in 2007 weer wordt vervangen door Pete Parada.

In 2012 verscheen het negende studio album Days Go By.
