Deze uit de Verenigde Staten afkomstige soulgroep werd in 1958 opgericht door Eddie Levert, William Powell, Walter Williams, Bill Isles en Bobby Massey. De heren kenden elkaar van de middelbare school. Onder de naam The Mascots brachten zij in 1961 hun eerste single uit Miracles. DJ Eddie O’Jay draaide het nummer regelmatig in zijn uitzending en als eerbetoon veranderde de groep in 1963 hun naam definitief naar The O’Jays. Lonely Driver is in datzelfde jaar de eerste single die onder hun nieuwe naam uitkwam. In 1965, het jaar dat hun debuutalbum Comin’ Through verscheen, verliet Bill Isles de groep.
Dankzij hun samenwerking met Gamble & Huff stoppen de heren niet met de groep en brengen zij met hun ondersteuning enkele singles uit. Bobby Massey verlaat de groep en ze gaan als trio verder. Met het album Back Stabbers uit 1972 worden zij de belangrijkste vertegenwoordigers van de Philadelphia soul. Ze scoren hits met o.a. For the love of money, Love train en Use ta be my girl.
In 1977 overleed William Powell aan de gevolgen van kanker en zijn vervanger werd Sammy Strain. Ze brachten nog verscheidene albums uit.
Met het album Let Me Touch You maakte de groep een comeback in 1987.
Ze hebben een eervolle vermelding in de Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, The Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame en kregen een BET Award voor hun gehele oeuvre.
