Op 10 maart 1964 wordt Neneh Mariann Karlsson geboren in Zweden. Bij ons is zij beter bekend onder de naam Neneh Cherry. De achternaam Cherry krijgt ze doordat haar moeder hertrouwt met Don Cherry en vanaf dat moment neemt zij de achternaam aan van haar moeders nieuwe man.
Ze heeft ook een bekende halfzus, zangeres Titiyo, en een bekende halfbroer,
Eagle-Eye Cherry.
Op haar 14e verhuist ze naar het Verenigd Koninkrijk en het voelde daar meteen als thuis aan voor haar.
Nadat ze in verschillende bandjes had gespeeld en ook als dj had opgetreden, begon ze in 1982 een solocarrière. Haar eerste single was Stop The War.
Haar debuutalbum Raw Like Sushi verscheen in 1989. Van dit album komen de grote hits als Buffalo Stance, Manchild en Inna City Mama.
In 1990 werd ze genomineerd voor een Grammy Award in de categorie Best New Artist, maar verloor van Milli Vanilli, die de Grammy later weer konden inleveren, omdat ze hun album niet zelf hadden ingezongen.
Haar tweede album Homebrew verscheen in 1992. De single Trout is mede geschreven en gezongen door Michael Stipe van R.E.M. The Notorious B.I.G. maakte een remix van het nummer Buddy X in 1993.
In 1994 scoort ze een grote hit met de single 7 Seconds, een duet met
Youssou N’Dour. Het album, Man, waarop de single staat, verscheen pas twee jaar later.
In 2006 startte Neneh een nieuwe band genaamd CirKus, bestaande uit Cameron McVey, haar dochter Lolita Moon en Karmil (ook wel bekend als Matt Kent). Ze brengen twee albums uit.
The Thing is een experimentele jazzgroep waar Neneh zich bij aansloot in 2011. In 2012 verscheen het album The Cherry Thing.
Neneh werkt in 2013 samen met het Londense duo RocketNumberNine a.k.a. The Page Brothers: Ben en Tom Page. Ze nemen samen het album MeYouWeYou op
In 2014 verscheen het soloalbum Blank Project.
