Bowie heeft zelf ooit beweerd dat het lied niet bedoeld was om een volkslied voor de glam te zijn, maar dat het eigenlijk gaat over de donkere boodschap van de apocalyps. Volgens een interview dat Bowie gaf aan Rolling Stone-magazine in 1973, vertellen de jongens hetzelfde verhaal dat de nieuwslezer vertelde in het lied 'Five Years' van Ziggy Stardust, het nieuwsfeit dat de aarde nog maar vijf jaar te bewonen is. Bowie legt uit: "All The Young Dudes is een lied over dit nieuwsfeit. Het is geen ode aan de jeugd, zoals de mensen dachten, het is juist volledig het tegenovergestelde."
