In 1969 was dit lied een zeer bescheiden hit, die niet verder kwam dan de 31e plaats in de Top 40. Negen jaar later stond het nummer opnieuw in de belangstelling en bereikte het niet alleen de 2e plaats in de Top 40, ook in de Top 100-jaarlijst van 1978 eindigde Only A Fool op nummer 2.
Trivia
Na in januari 1978 de tiende plaats bereikt te hebben, zakte het lied in februari naar nummer 18, waar het drie weken verbleef. Daarna werd de weg omhoog opnieuw ingezet en stond het in april en mei van dat jaar vijf weken op nummer 2.
