Al in 1995 spelen de vier leden van de band met elkaar als Kara’s Flowers. The Fourth World is het enige album dat verscheen en op MTV was de groep te zien met de single Soap Disco. In 2001 krijgt de groep versterking van James Valentine en wordt de naam veranderd in Maroon, waar later nog het cijfer 5 aan werd toegevoegd.

In 2002 verschijnt het album Songs Of Jane, dat bij ons bijna een jaar in de albumlijst genoteerd staat. De eerste single van dat album, Harder To Breathe, blijft steken in de tipparade. De opvolger This Love wordt alarmschijf en bereikt in het voorjaar van 2004 de derde plaats in de Top 40. Van het album komen daarna nog drie singles in de lijst.

In het voorjaar van 2007 komt er met It Won’t Be Soon Before Long een tweede album uit. Op dat moment was Makes Me Wonder de vierde top 10-hit van de groep.

De samenwerking met Rihanna op If I Never See Your Face Again in 2008 bevalt de groep dusdanig dat in 2011 Christina Aguilera een nummer met Maroon 5 opneemt. Moves Like Jagger bereikt de eerste plaats van de Top 40 en wordt de grootste hit van de Amerikaanse groep.

Overexposed is het vierde studioalbum van Maroon 5, waarvan de single Payphone (met Wiz Khalifa) in 2012 de achtste plaats bereikt. De opvolger, One More Night, is met een 16e plaats wat minder succesvol. Zowel Daylight, Love Somebody en Lucky Strike weten een notering in de tipparade te realiseren.

In september van 2014 verschijnt het album V, waarvan Maps en Animals beide Alarmschijf worden. In 2015 is Sugar de laatste single van de originele uitvoering van V. In de aanloop naar de zomer verschijnt een nieuwe track, This Summer's Gonna Hurt Like A Motherf----r, dat in de Top 40 niet verder komt dan nummer 30.

In oktober van 2016 laat Maroon 5 een ander geluid horen met Don't Wanna Know, een samenwerking met Kendrick Lamar. In de videoclip worden de heren, verkleed als Pokémons, achtervolgd door fanatieke Pokémon Go-spelers. Voor hun volgende single Cold, die in februari 2017 verschijnt, werken ze samen met Future. In november 2017 moet het zesde album van de band verschijnen. Met SZA leveren ze vooruitlopend op die release de track What Lovers Do af. Girls Like You krijgt in juni van 2018 een nieuwe versie met daarop ook Cardi B. Ondertussen groeit Maroon 5 dan uit tot de meest succesvolle Amerikaanse groep die we in de Top 40 hebben gezien als ze ook The Black Eyed Peas passeren.
